London (Brain)- 2008 is the 50th anniversary year of the kustom bicycle movement, by our reckoning. In order to celebrate this important milestone, we here at BikeRod&Kustom felt it was necessary to fill in the lost pages of our movement's early history. And so, for the first time anywhere, BR&K is pleased to present you with the detailed story of how kustom bicycling first began.

This series of articles will cover the first 20 years of its history. For our first installment we will be covering the years 1958 to 1962, a time when kustom bicycle style was in its infancy. These were the days before factory-produced bikes like the Huffy "Penguin" and Schwinn "Stingray" came onto the scene. Young people had a cool vision of being able to ride their bicycles with kustom style, and they made it happen by taking it to the streets.

Amsterdam (WazMed)- Government's Foresight report on mental well-being says mending your bike is good for the brain. Lots of bike shops offer public maintenance classes. Until now this was thought to be good for a cyclist's wallet, now it's revealed it's also good for the brain, too! The UK's Government's Foresight report on mental well-being, published today, says activities such as gardening or learning how to mend your own bike, are key ways to keep the mind active, and stave off mental illness. The think-tank's Mental Capital and Wellbeing report suggests people should take up new social and personal activities, with fixing bikes second on the list.

23 July 2008 - Amsterdam (Brain)- After a night of forced sleep I woke up in the Chopperdome basement. As far as I remember  it  was around 10a.m when I rolled out of my bed (my bed being an air mattress), I felt refreshed--- sort of. The previous evenings liquid refreshments had me on the go all night. Technically I was semi refreshed.

The morning brought a surprise, a Californian named mr. Hyde.  Mr Hyde is a member of the Chopaderos bicycle club. He arrived at the Chopperdome to pay a quick visit and was invited in for some Amsterdam bakery goods- breakfast cheese buns. Mr Hyde and I are familiar with each other though the club, and from meeting each other in Ontario Canada during the Wasaga beach custom bike cruise. Hyde was refamiliarizing himself with Amsterdam and was waiting for an old friend to arrive from Germany.

With a good waking up- by way of shower and shave -I was ready to explore. I rolled out on a 7 speed Basman supplied by the Chopperdome and headed down to the core of Amsterdam by way of  the Ädmiral  De Ruiterweg",  which is basically a straight path from the Chopperdome  to the centre of the old city.  The ride was my first exploration in what it takes to ride and survive in the city.  Being on the cautious side I tended to stay right on the the bike path, avoiding the death trap of riding in front of the trams and the blatant testing to see if bicycles really had the right of way at intersections.

With a little manouvering I wound around the bike paths and over the canals till I saw the gabled roofs of the old city.  In the distance I spied the landmark that told me I was going the right way- an enormous old building with a statue of Atlas holding up the world at its centre peak . I was looking for a guarded bike storage place near the infamous red light district, just up the street from Madame Tussauds' wax museum. and down the road from a collosal stone sculpture possessing strong phallic overtones.

I found the bike lock up, which looked like a mini golf course taken over with bicycles, I made arrangments and locked the bike up with a chain big  enough to anchor the Titanic. Since I was right next to the world famous Amsterdam Red Light district I figured it was prudent for me to check it out.  Made out a the world greatest Disney land of porn and vice, along with featuring a few great second hand book shops, it proved to be quite memorable.

The street was filled with the same people that you would see in an amusement park, businesmen, children, mothers- babies in stollers. What you wouldnt see in Disneyland  but would see in Amsterdams Red Light district was every manner of vibrating appliance in every other shop window, along with graphic displays that left nothing to the imagination .  I knew that the working ladies plyed their trade in shop windows of this area, but I noticed  that it wasnt' in your face"" or obnoxious solicitation.  Many of the windows with the ladies of the night  behind them were hard to see through in the daylight. Undoubtedly the windows and flesh laden store fronts would be quite visible at night, when the mothers and children who had strolled though during the day were comfortably back at home. During the day anyone can go anywhere in Amsterdam. The night may be another story, I will find out later in the week.....
