The Modern COTY
15 June 2009 - Amsterdam (Wazzup)- In the early years of the FBI the COTY was held in december, not being part of the FBI meeting end of july. The COTY was known as "bikes behind the dikes" in those days and dominated by the Dutch entries. In 2005 the first international entries showed at the last "bikes behind the dikes" december COTY, but didn't make it into the top 3. This all changed in 2006 when the COTY was added to the FBI meeting. The modern international COTY came alive at this first FBI-COTY with Sami taking home the crown to Finland.
THE CLASSIC COTY
The 2001-2005 "Bikes behind the dikes" or classic COTY series, as said dominated by Dutch entries. Strange...no, as the classic COTY was a Dutch championship. Otherwise Matt's 7/32 Green Chopper that showed out of competition at the show in 2002 would certainly have made it into the top 3, and probably would have claimed first prize. Aswell as other bikes, been build in the classic COTY years, elsewhere in the cruise galaxy probably would have made it into these lists.
In 2005 the "Bikes behind the Dikes" was renamed to COTY and was made into an open competition. The FBI in 2005 had become a real international meet with besides Europeans now also Firebikes from Canada showing. An international COTY platform was needed. At the last classic COTY in december of that year the first international competators entered, but the Dutch where too strong. But one thing was certain, this was all about too change in 2006, when the COTY became part of the FBI and this way part of the biggest international custom cruiser and chopper meet in the cruise galaxy.
The classes in this 2001-2005 list as used are the same as in these modern COTY days, although in the classic COTY years these classes sometimes had other names and other voting systems, the list would have looked like this.
THE MODERN COTY
The FBI-COTY in 2006 had many entries as all bikes showing at the FBI playgrounds more or less entered making it hard too judge all bikes, something that in 2007 would change as you would need to enter you bike specificly for the COTY. The first modern COTY winner was Sami from Finland claiming 6,4% of all points. The COTY was a very close race that year with just a few points difference in the top 3.
In 2007 Marcel with some help from Reno at Cybicle claimed the title with a giant win...over 10% of all points ended up in his basket, claiming the title in glorieus style and showing the Dutch could win in an international field. Matt 7/32 withdrew his CC class Basman as not finished during the day, would it have been finished glory could have been closer once again for him. As at that time the bike scored 4,8% of the points. The UK is still waiting for it's first official FBI or COTY title.
It looked like the CC class was about to start dominating with lower scores for TT and FF class that year, but proved to be a one time affair, as in 2008 the German Basdriver based on the 346 Basman took 7,4 % of the points seeting the best score for a TT bike in the modern COTY. Was the Classic FBI won by based on Phat cycles build bikes untill 2003, then came Basman who has seen, besides 2006, his frame or one of his builds in the the COTY top 5.
But all glory went to Finland again in 2008. Ari Sinkkonen proved once again that Finnish lines can't be beaten at the modern COTY so far.
In 2006 and 2007 the winning COTY bikes entered an online competition with the BBO winners of the no longer excisting Chopperbicyle.net forum. And COTY winners proved once again, the best bikes in the cruise galaxy show at the FBI-COTY.
Note that LL class in this list is shown as TT, as would be for 2009 COTY when we bring cut down the number of classes we added over the years, back to basics. The "%" shows the percentage of total points the bike scored.
For 2009, the FBI HQ received 30 entries so far and with the experience from previous years we can say this years FBI-COTY will be smashing with a max of entries...so make your reservation on time, because if inside erea is filled up we wil have to put your bike in outside area near entrance.
